A 2021 UK wide higher education study saw student wellbeing measures fall to their lowest levels, and mental health and wellbeing was the main reason given by students who were considering leaving their course. The pandemic has exacerbated financial hardship, resulted in loss of part time work and impacted family incomes, meaning current students face far-reaching challenges and barriers to success. The result is academically able and motivated students rethinking university plans.

Our goal is to raise funds to provide enhanced services and support to enable this generation of students to fulfil their potential and achieve their goals. For example, funds raised will go towards scholarships and support health and wellbeing services and activities for students most in need. Study support grants will provide laptops to those at a digital disadvantage, provide relief for those facing hardship and fund study field trips, work placements and volunteering opportunities.

  • “I have been having to share a laptop with my siblings during lockdown which has limited my ability to attend lectures successfully. Thank you very much for supporting me during my studies. I feel relieved as I know that this laptop will really help me with my final year. Thank you once again.”

  • “I decided to apply for the scholarship because I was concerned I wouldn’t be able to financially support myself during the MSc. I applied for the Gent-Rust Scholarship only and gambled the opportunity of starting this course on being awarded this scholar.”

  • "Wow, thank you so much, this has made my day! I really appreciate this - this money will go a long way towards alleviating my financial stresses this year."
