Community Growing

EcoACTIVE is an environmental charity working to educate and inspire people to create a better planet. We are raising money to support our community gardens, both to benefit nature and help those who may be feeling socially isolated make new friends and feel part of their community.

Situation

We are in an ecological crisis where nature in our cities is under increasing pressure, wildlife is declining and our green spaces are more important than ever. One way to address this is to create new habitats for insects, birds, animals and plants. At the same time, we are experiencing a social crisis of loneliness and isolation as many people feel increasingly cut off from their neighbours. Being part of a local project such as a community garden can have a big impact on people’s lives.

Solution

Community gardens give people from all walks of life a chance to share space and work together. We help groups run sustainable community gardens through skill sharing, providing equipment, training and advice and working with them to make physical improvements to the spaces they run. We enable people to participate in physical activity outdoors amongst nature, make new friends and build their confidence and self esteem.

  • What do you enjoy? "Meeting people I haven’t met before, exchanging gardening tips and plants, seeds, sense of community, being outdoors and part of something good, hope of transforming currently unused space into something very special!"

  • “Developing an inclusive community that feels ownership over itself and its land.”

    — Gardening volunteer

  • “I find this allotment garden to be my peaceful space. My husband died and since growing my plants here it has been such a positive impact on my mental health and family life.”

    — Gardening Volunteer

  • “It's been great to see the plants sprouting and growing bigger. I've learned a lot more about gardening from both eco-active members and some of the residents who have experience. It's been a good way to meet other residents and it's good to spend more time outdoors.”
