Thousands of tonnes of good food are wasted by the UK food industry yearly. Millions of people are in food poverty and struggling to eat. We address these two issues by redistributing this surplus food to people that need it most. Our work is particularly poignant at Christmas.

    Situation

Across the country, millions of families are struggling to afford to eat, with numbers rising significantly since the pandemic. Sussex and Surrey suffer pockets of high deprivation in areas including Brighton, Crawley, Hastings and Dorking. The impact of Covid-19 saw us become an emergency food provider, tripling the amount of food we redistribute. We currently feed 21,570 vulnerable people every week. We see this emergency situation continuing for the medium term and are planning accordingly.

    Solution

We intercept the surplus food before it is wasted, bringing it to our warehouse in bulk form. Here our army of 150 volunteers each week break the food down into smaller parcels that we deliver to 166 community groups to feed their beneficiaries with. This means people receive nutritious food. Furthermore, community groups can use their scarce resources on providing activities such as advice, support and counselling instead of buying food. This helps people to move out of the food poverty trap.
