Every four hours someone in the UK becomes paralysed. Only one in three newly injured people receive specialist care in a spinal centre. Spinal Injuries Association works to bridge the gap from hospital to home, providing crucial support and guidance to everyone affected by spinal cord injury.

    Situation

Spinal cord injury (SCI) can be caused by accident or illness and is often a life-changing condition. We seek to empower newly injured people to lead an independent life. Increasingly, spinal cord injured people face barriers that hinder their transition from hospital back to their homes due a lack of specialist clinical knowledge, incomplete rehabilitation, and poor care packages. Until someone can return home, they cannot fully begin to rebuild their lives and move towards living independently

    Solution

We aim to overcome the barriers blocking the road to recovery by providing specialist support and expertise to bridge the way. Our team of nurse specialists provide clinical advice and advocacy, produce emergency care plans and deliver vital training to healthcare professionals. They also refer to our peer support and advocacy teams who work collaboratively to support spinal cord injured people equipping them with the skills, knowledge and confidence needed to transition from hospital to home.
