Little Village fears that families living in poverty will continue to be stuck in ‘lockdown’ for years to come due to job loss, poor housing & mental health challenges, all exacerbated by the pandemic. This means the 'support bubble' of help we provide at Little Village will be needed more than ever.

Child poverty is rising for the first time in a generation: over 4 in 10 children in inner London are growing up poor. We see the challenges & systematic constraints trapping families in poverty, which are being worsened by the pandemic. When surveying professionals who refer families to us, 83.3% said children in poverty are suffering immediate difficulties because of the pandemic, and 97% had seen an increase in mental health difficulties. As lockdown eases these families are being left behind.
Little Village operates one of the largest ‘baby bank’ services in the UK, providing predominantly pre-loved items from other local families, including all the essentials, from socks to cots, buggies to coats, for children under 5 living in poverty across London. Since the pandemic, demand for our services has doubled. More than alleviating material poverty we provide families with support and connection to their local community, reducing isolation and improving wellbeing and mental health.
Things are opening up and people are going out, going on holidays, going to the pub, and that makes me feel isolated and it makes me feel like a bad mum. I can’t get the children the things they need and the things they want. I feel like I’m not good enough.
I want to say thank you not just for (supporting me) but for listening to me. Tonight, you listened to me and it’s the first time I’ve spoken to anyone, not even my best friend. I try to be brave and make people laugh. I am so grateful for everything Little Village has done for me and my family.
Little Village has been a lifeline for families before and now even more so since this crisis.
Covid-19 came with changes that we weren't prepared for – my partner was made redundant. I was very stressed out not knowing how we’d afford baby clothes and all the other things...Little Village gave me hope that everything was going to be OK and that there’s support out there for families.
