At NYCGB we passionately believe that all young people, regardless of circumstance or background, should have equal access to a high-quality inspiring music education. Young people’s access to and participation in music education varies widely across the UK, especially for those in state education and from low-income families. As a result, many young people miss out on opportunities to discover singing, develop skills and benefit from the educational, well-being and social outcomes of taking part. This has been exacerbated by the current Corona crisis, which if not addressed will create an increasing social injustice for disadvantaged young people in the UK.
NYCGB operates nationwide to develop sustainable singing opportunities in schools and communities and accessible pathways for young people to pursue their talents at a regional and national level. Essential to this work, we aim to provide all qualifying applicants with financial assistance towards costs of participating in our programmes, including audition, membership and course fees and travel. For many families, funding their child’s musical development is not possible without a bursary.
“They are of a phenomenally high, world-class standard… it’s hard to find a leading young singer in the profession who hasn’t come up through the National Youth Choir.”
“Our son had the most fantastic time on the course, and we are really extremely grateful that he could take part. NYCGB provides him with amazing opportunities that he would not be able to access anywhere else and he is so proud that he is part of it."
“I had been really struggling in isolation with regards to motivation, loneliness etc. This was just what I needed! It was a bit of structure and normality in these strange times! It makes you appreciate the power of music a lot more!"
“Music lessons, music exams, choir memberships and travel expenses put a lot of pressure on my Mum, and sometimes my ambitions may seem unachievable. However, the bursary scheme has showed me that there are ways for me to reach my ultimate goal and to take my singing to the next level.”
