This campaign has now closed

Young adult carers (YAC) are too often spending significant amounts of time caring for a relative in addition to the time they need to spend on education and themselves. Coronavirus has significantly impacted on and increased those pressures. Our project will work to support 30 young adult carers.

    Situation

In Blackburn with Darwen we are seeing a similar trend to the carers trust pandemic YAC research report: 59% say their mental health is worse. 78% feel worried about their future and education 74% feel more stressed 69% feel less connected to others. 19.7% report an increase of 30 hours or more spent caring per week. YAC’s are often marginalised, their voices unheard, and their needs unrecognised. It is therefore vital we offer increased support at a time when they really need us the most.

    Solution

We will offer practical/emotional support to ensure that YAC’s in BwD enjoy and achieve more, narrowing the gap as a result of COVID and support YAC’s by levelling up opportunities, removing inequalities. Recruiting a specialist worker to run a targeted YAC offer: Mental/Emotional health and wellbeing support/workshops Opportunities for YAC’s to engage in positive activities with peers away from caring roles Educational support, bridging the learning gap, homework/employability workshops/groups
