This campaign has now closed

Expectant mothers in Kanyanga currently walk up to 30km to the facility, close to their due date, and sleep in poor conditions until they go into labor. We will construct a mother's shelter at Kanyanga facility to increase the number of women who give birth at the facility to reduce maternal deaths.

    Situation

The maternal mortality rate in Zambia is 224 per 100,000 live births and infant mortality is reported at 45 deaths per 1000 live births. In Kanyanga expectant mothers travel for up to 30km to reach the nearest health post (which serves 25,000 people) and stay in a mother’s shelter prior to giving birth. The shelter there has no running water, beds, or electricity. As a result, women either stay in poor conditions, or choose to give birth at home, which increases risk for both mother and baby.

    Solution

We will replace the existing temporary structure with a larger, more comfortable environment for expectant mothers and their families, which meets the Ministry of Health standards. We will install clean water, showers, electricty, and toilets, and provide beds and bedding to improve the environment and hygiene, and increase the likelihood of mothers giving birth at the facility. This will help the Ministry of Health to achieve its target of ensuring all births take place in a health facility.
