At The Scar Free Foundation we’re determined to end scarring within a generation. Your support will test and develop exciting new 3D printing technologies to transform the way surgeons perform facial reconstructions – with better results for children like Elizabeth, who was burnt in a fire.

    Situation

Scars impact 20 million people in the UK – causing pain, loss of movement and function, and affecting mental health and confidence. Around 1 in 100 people are affected by a facial disfigurements - which could be caused by congenital abnormalities such as cleft lip and palate, trauma such as burns or injury, or from surgery for cancer or other conditions. Current facial reconstruction surgery requires complex operations, painful skin grafts, extended recovery time and often additional scarring.

    Solution

The latest developments in 3D printing mean that it is now possible to custom print cartilage and other tissue types to exactly match the patients needs, which will transform how children like Elizabeth will experience their surgery and recovery. Our expert, multidisciplinary team will test and improve the materials so that we can progress to a full clinical trial.
