South Sudan is one of the poorest countries in the world, worn down by years of conflict. We believe that quality education for girls is vital for breaking cycles of poverty and violence, especially when the instability and risk drives many other NGOs away.

    Situation

Girls in South Sudan are among the most disadvantaged in the world. Despite small improvements in primary education, most girls drop out of school before the end of secondary because of early marriage, pregnancy, and an expectation that girls do the domestic chores. A lack of education cements inequality for women and girls. This is compounded by the traumatic impact of ongoing conflict in a country that has had years of war with external enemies, civil war and tribal tensions.

    Solution

Ibba Girls' Boarding School helps to overcome these traumas by providing safe environment in which the girls can live and learn. The school has received special permission to have both primary and secondary streams on the same site, helping to create continuity for the girls and reducing drop out rates at the crucial stages of transition. IGBS also offers a high standard of teaching, including extra-curricular learning through debates, music, dance and life-skills.
