In a world of pandemic and lockdowns, Home-Start Wandsworth's programme of group activities and 1:1 support is needed now more than ever to reduce isolation for vulnerable families and improve the futures of children in their early years.
It ran from 12:00 PM, 30 November 2021 to 12:00 PM, 7 December 2021
Registered Charity in England and Wales (1124109)
In the last year, 83% of our families reported struggling to cope because of isolation when we met them. The pandemic has exacerbated this with the reduction in services like health visiting, missed early years education and play opportunities. Loneliness and a lack of social connection are contributing to higher levels of poor mental health and anxiety, impacting on children's wellbeing. In an uncertain world, children under 5 depend on a positive external environment for their development.
Our programme of group activities will include storytelling, early literacy sessions, arts & crafts, for parents to attend with their children, for free. We will also offer buggy walks and picnics in the park, and day trips for families to places such as Kew Gardens and West Wittering beach. In addition, we will provide 1:1 support for families via our staff and trained volunteers, who work with parents and children to encourage their participation and increase their confidence.
“The thought of going out on my own was overwhelming, but thanks to my volunteer I was able to leave the house for the first time in a long time! It was so good to have adult conversations and meet with other mums. The group were really welcoming, and I felt like they understood."
“When I am happier, my baby is happier and also it is easier to deal with upsets and illnesses etc. So overall she has a better quality of life.”
"Home-Start Wandsworth gives a lifeline to some parents who otherwise would be stuck indoors and not coping. It helps parents feel they are part of the community and can meet other parents on the same journey as them."
“I think the walk and talks are great. I get up in the morning and have a plan for the day. I get to enjoy adult company and talk and my little one gets to run around with other children. It’s perfect."
