Fulfilling potential through and beyond sport

Sportspeople are not invincible. One day, their sporting careers will end. Most sportspeople simply don’t control when this will happen. By providing specialist transition and wellbeing services, we are here to help all sportspeople become better prepared for a life outside of sport.

Not all sportspeople win gold medals or million-pound contracts. The reality for most of the UK’s 17,000 sportspeople is that when their sporting careers come to an end – often abruptly – the majority will need to start a second career. Even before the pandemic, 71% of players’ retirement was out of their control. One in five sportswomen now believe they may have to give up their sport due to the impacts of COVID-19.

We exist to help any sportsperson – irrespective of the stage of their career or what they’ve achieved – to develop their identity and make a continued positive contribution to society, whilst ensuring they receive the best preparation for the next phase of their life. We do this by delivering person-centred training, wellbeing and transition support. Our services are accessed by over 1,000 sportspeople every year and include masterclasses, tailored one-to-one support and mental health support.

  • As an athlete who loves training with my teammates but detests training itself, I was struggling. Added to the fact that I am in transition as I reach the end of my sporting career, I was in desperate need of support. [Switch the Play's] Life Beyond Sport Bootcamp was a God send. Thank you so much.

    — Ama, Switch the Play 'Life Beyond Sport Bootcamp' attendee

  • When I compare myself to how I was even this time last year, I am so much more confident. Switch the Play helped me realise I do have transferrable skills and there are businesses out there that are looking for that.

    — Jamie, Switch the Play 'Switched On' member

  • I now have a greater awareness of the importance of planning for life outside of sport. I acknowledge that I can start preparing whilst still competing, and it has been great to have someone deliver [masterclasses] to me who has been through the exact same experience.
