Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in the UK. However it shouldn't be because it is treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early. Through strategic investment in targeted research, we will deliver improvements in bowel cancer survival in our lifetime.

Situation
Around 16,000 people die from bowel cancer each year. 9 out of 10 patients diagnosed in the earliest stages will survive but to increase early diagnosis we need to know more about the risk factors, how to prevent the disease developing, why it is increasing in patients under the age of 50, and how to improve screening. Research is also needed into treatment for advanced bowel cancer so that those who are diagnosed at a later stage have a better chance of survival.
Solution
The major advances in saving lives from bowel cancer in the past 20 years have all come through research. We have a network of highly skilled researchers, work in collaboration with others and are committed to developing future research leaders. We work with researchers on our Scientific Advisory Board and patients on our Lay Review Panel to ensure we are funding the best quality research that will be of most benefit to patients.
