    Situation

Over 400,000 children don’t own a single book at home. These children go to bed without a bedtime story. Due to the pandemic, there are now 4.5 million children living in poverty in the UK and illiteracy is the second biggest child concern after food poverty with 1 in 5 children unable to read. They are at serious risk of becoming illiterate adults. Illiteracy means a poorer quality of life and far less opportunities.

    Solution

Giving children books of their own and igniting a passion for reading is at the core of what UK Reads does. This Christmas, we aim to gift 6,000 children with their first ever book which is also likely to be their only Christmas present.Your generosity has the power to help turn the page on illiteracy and change a child’s story forever. Please give what you can today. Thank you.
