Firefly for Syrians works with children aged 5-18 forced to flee the Syrian Civil War. Thousands of displaced Syrian families now live within Turkey and in camps on the Turkish/Syrian border. Due to war, C19 and the breakdown of civil society there is a lack of frameworks and projects which enable Syrians themselves to address the challenges they face by utilising their own knowledge and experience. Firefly for Syrians was founded by Firefly International to address this urgent, unmet need.

In 2020-21 we provided 8000 workshop spaces and 676 children attended our classes monthly. Our programme targets children's academic and psycho-social needs and plugs the gap of lost school years. Our fun hands on teaching methods engage children who have had disrupted schooling and we provide the essential opportunity to learn Arabic. Our Syrian team has established a very successful teaching model with teaching kits which they have rolled out in Antakya and to refugee camps in Northern Syria.

  • "Firefly is doing tremendous work for children affected by conflict they didn't cause. Children who need safe places and the chance to continue with their education."

    — Jeremy Irons, actor and Firefly supporter

  • "Thousands of Syrian refugee children benefit each year from the safe space and education Firefly for Syrians provides. This wonderful work builds hope and helps to stabilise these devastated communities"

    — Joanna David, actor and Firefly patron

  • "The size of the challenge this year has been huge but with hard work from our dedicated team we adapted to cope with C19. We moved between direct education to distance education, and the challenge turned into an opportunity for our programs to spread in faraway places and for greater numbers”

    — Fadia Shaker, Firefly for Syrians Director

  • "In just four months my daughter has learnt her Arabic letters, she is now able to read simple words. I like the approach, the programme is well structured and not overwhelming for young children. The learning materials are colourful and my children love playing and learning with them"

    — The mother of 5 year old Syrian refugee girl attending our main centre in Antakya, Turkey.
