Less than 5% of disabled children in Tanzania are currently attending school – this is particularly marked in poor, remote areas where they are amongst the poorest and most marginalised children in the country. Teachers are reluctant to work with disabled children as they don't understand their learning needs and lack the skills to meet them. Harmful, culturally entrenched attitudes around disability create additional barriers, as disabled children are so often segregated and hidden away.

This project will increase in the number of disabled children accessing quality, mainstream primary education in the Mtwara region of southern Tanzania providing them with the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Through the delivery of a focused training and awareness-raising programme, this project provides a holistic solution to break down the fundamental barriers preventing 95% of disabled children from attending school and fully participating in society.
