STEP Up is a project designed to help children aged 10-11 to gain resilience and confidence as they face the big change from primary to secondary school. Our school-based workshops will empower pupils to manage their anxieties and find positive ways to meet the challenge of starting a new school.

    Situation

Research highlights that the move from primary to secondary school is one of the most difficult stages in a child’s educational journey. Pupils who struggle with the move - especially vulnerable children experiencing other stressful events in their lives - are more likely to show poor academic performance, lower attendance levels, reduced confidence and self-esteem, and increased symptoms of anxiety and depression, leading to an increased likelihood of dropping out of education.

    Solution

Drawing on 26 years' experience of providing solution-focused approaches that help children manage their emotions and behaviours, our engaging and interactive school-based workshops will help pupils identify their concerns, name their unique skills and strengths, and provide strategies that will help them cope positively with change. We will work with local Clinical Commissioning Groups to identify 14 schools (eg. those with poor attendance levels) that would most benefit from our workshops.
