UK poverty rates are at their highest levels on record, with an additional 700,000 people being plunged into poverty as a result of the economic crisis created by the Covid pandemic. Many families who have never need help before, will this Christmas find themselves struggling to make ends meet. In the UK each year, 250,000 tonnes of high-quality, in-date surplus food goes to waste, whilst thousands of families are facing unprecedented levels of food insecurity.
FareShare South West, an independent part of the FareShare UK network is the largest food redistribution charityin the region, and we work with front-line charities, schools and community groups to ensure surplus food reaches those that need it most in our communities. This Christmas, our food will supply food banks, provide hot meals at homeless shelters, help combat isolation at lunch clubs for the elderly, provide nutritious meals at children’s Breakfast Clubs and create festive food parcels for families in crisis.
Since the pandemic more and more people have been finding it difficult to provide food for their families and we've seen a huge increase in demand for food parcels. Prior to FareShare we weren't able to provide so many parcels and we were having to buy in items which is obviously not sustainable.
Christmas. The children are eagerly looking forward to ‘the most wonderful time of the year’ whilst far too many parents are struggling to make ends meet with no free school meals. We don’t have a magic wand to wave, but thanks to FareShare South West we can ensure there is good food on the table.
FareShare South West has been an absolute lifesaver during the pandemic. My partner hasn't been working since lockdown and unfortunately wasn't able to be furloughed so money is extremely tight. FareShare has been able to help me feed my family good, healthy, wholesome food for little price.
The women we work with have no-one and nothing. We are so thankful to FareShare for providing the best food to meets womens' needs- UHT milk for women without fridges, instant food for women who only have a kettle to cook with, as well as nourishing fresh food too. Thank you FareShare South West!
