    Situation

Extreme poverty, deforestation, land degradation, flooding, ineffective farming methods, smallholdings, in a semi-arid climate with increasingly unreliable seasonal weather patterns, means 20,000 people in the Itinyi Valley are struggling for survival, face high levels of unemployment and child malnutrition, with women and children walking 10-15km a day to fetch water.

    Solution

We are creating a scalable model of community transformation in the Itinyi Valley. Using permaculture principles on our 24-acre organic farm, we are engaging farmers in agroforestry, land restoration, forest gardens, rainwater collection & storage, tree planting, diversity of crops, bees, poultry & fish farming. Women and young people are enrolled in our sustainable community programme and network groups as we build a new circular economy where all stakeholders benefit including the environment.
