    Situation

St Albans district is a successful area with sought after houses, schools and parks. But it has one of the larger UK carbon footprints per head. It also has disproportionate impact on the wider world. Residents here have influence over major businesses and organisations, which reach into the lives of many thousands globally. Either as consumers or leaders it is becoming more critical to act decisively. We want to win everyone's hearts and minds to focus on reaching net zero before it's too late.

    Solution

Through our petition, the council declared a climate emergency in 2019. This launched a district-wide sustainability strategy, unlocking resources for us to create deeper community impact. We're seeking funding towards our first staff member to run a targeted community engagement programme. We want to influence individuals, families and local groups to take active steps to reduce their carbon emissions. As more individuals engage more fully, their behaviour changes will have a wide reach.
