Trees for Life

Growing the Caledonian Forest Habitat

We are raising funds to help us rewild the Scottish Highlands by growing a seed source of rare native trees. Our vision is of a revitalised wild forest, a place rich in biodiversity where wildlife can flourish and communities can thrive.

Situation

The Scottish Highlands were once covered by the Caledonian Forest, a richly biodiverse habitat that has now all but disappeared. Centuries of over-grazing have stripped the hills and glens leaving only small disconnected fragments of a once magnificent forest. But its not too late to bring the forest back. Planting the right trees in the right locations will help to restore biodiversity and create a healthy connected habitat in which wildlife and people can thrive.

Solution

Trees for Life are working to rewild the Scottish Highlands by cultivating around 100,000 native trees each year at Dundreggan Tree Nursery. These trees are grown from locally collected seed and carefully nurtured by skilled nursery staff, trainees and volunteers. When they have developed healthy roots, these young trees are planted out in remote glens and on hillsides where they will become a seed source, helping new areas of forest to flourish and expand their range across the landscape.
