Cameroon’s Critically Endangered Cross River gorillas are threatened with extinction due to Anglophone, bushmeat, climate change and coronavirus crises. This calls for urgent action. Working with local communities, we protect gorillas and their habitat while also addressing human development needs.

    Situation

The ongoing Anglophone crisis, a violent conflict in the two English-speaking regions of Cameroon (South West & North West), forced many people to flee their homes and take refuge in the forests. Uncontrolled logging and slash and burn farming in highland rainforests of the South West region are destroying and fragmenting the habitat of Africa’s most endangered great ape, the Cross River gorilla (with a population of 250-300 spread over 14 locations). The corona crisis exacerbates this problem.

    Solution

We will conduct an updated Cross River gorilla census and establish a robust monitoring programme, which will also detect and deter illegal activities; develop and implement Management Plans for Tofala Hill Wildlife Sanctuary and 4 Community Forests, which have already been officially registered; improve existing agroforestry systems; and strengthen and expand the capacity of 12 community social enterprises, including agroforestry, which we have successfully piloted.
