  • I felt really overwhelmed and really excited because I knew I was going to do good. I felt like I was on my own but really I wasn’t because I had everyone around helping me. It feels like I’ve got actual friends because before I was all by myself. Now I have something that makes me happy!

  • Thank you for having my two sons on Furthering Talent for the last 2 years. They’ve experienced many genres of music and had their eyes opened to many aspects of the music world. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed the experience and hope that more children get the same chance through this fantastic programme.

    — Dawn, the mother of two children who were on the Furthering Talent programme

  • Furthering Talent has helped me to connect with my pupils in a deeper, more personalised way and consider so many new approaches to teaching (and learning!) an instrument. As I embark on a new career teaching secondary music, I know that the lessons lessons I have learnt will inform my practice.

    — Jonathan Cornish, Furthering Talent Music Leader

Situation

Support for children who are able and interested in music making is lacking. In primary school they receive free instrumental lesson for up to a year but as these are largely with the entire class, one-to-one input isn’t given to those who’d most benefit from it. This particularly affects children from low income families who can’t afford private tuition. Covid-19 and resulting school closures has exacerbated this disparity.

Solution

Furthering Talent identifies and nurtures the musical potential of these children. We'll work with Lewisham Music, other local music and community organisations and parents/carers to enable them to reach their potential. Each child benefits from bespoke support for at least two years including: free weekly instrumental lessons; a bursary of £150 to help them achieve their goals; an Individual Learning Plan so they can set music development goals and termly enrichment activities.
