Future Youth Zone wants disadvantaged children to have the childhood they deserve - the chance to find a sport they enjoy and train to become their best, the skills and knowledge to cook a healthy meal, the friends to support them through adolescence and the experiences that will help them grow.

    Situation

The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly affected young people, especially those growing up in Barking & Dagenham, London's borough with the highest rates of childhood poverty, obesity and teenage pregnancy, with 20% of young people experiencing one of the toxic trio - addiction, mental health and domestic abuse. These are the young people who miss out on childhood, get left behind their wealthier peers and grow up with low self-esteem and little respect for the society they don't feel a part of.

    Solution

Future Youth Zone addresses this problem by providing the disadvantaged young people of Barking & Dagenham with somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to. Much of young people's development happens outside of school and so it is crucial that quality activities facilitated by youth workers are offered in their community. Future's aims to positively transform young people's lives, inspiring them to make healthier life choices so that they may grow into happier and healthier adults.
