As Sumatra’s rainforests fall for farmlands, infrastructure and roads, orangutans are being pushed to the edge of extinction. We need a game-changing conservation action plan which will transform their fate, and allow wild orangutans to thrive in the safe forests.

    Situation

A great deal of valuable conservation work has been carried out over the last 20 years, yet forests are still falling in Sumatra and orangutan populations are increasingly threatened and fragmented. We need an urgent step-change in conservation strategies to protect orangutans and their forest home. We are thinking long-term, big-picture and striving to bring about fundamental changes to the way that Sumatra’s forests and wildlife are valued, managed and protected.

    Solution

We have conducted a deep analysis of deforestation trends and drivers, giving us vital insight to design innovative projects to keep forests standing and give wild orangutans space to thrive. Forest loss is an economic issue, and our community-powered conservation strategy will equip villages next to orangutan habitat to act as forest custodians, a bedrock of conservation success. Together we will protect, restore and re-connect forests, building resilience for orangutans and communities alike.
