    Situation

Madagascar is the most severely affected country by natural disasters in Africa, and third most affected in the world. On average, three severe natural disasters (cyclones or tropical storms) strike the island every year, plunging the country into a cycle of constant reconstruction, causing the displacement of communities and preventing families of getting out of poverty for good. The effects of global warming and climate change accentuate the impact, with more frequent and intense disasters.

    Solution

We have designed an innovative Early Warning System providing cyclone and flooding alerts to vulnerable communities in high-risk areas of Madagascar. Our project will build community capacity for early actions and coordinated response to reduce the number of people affected following natural hazards in Andranomena and Morondava districts. Using a participatory approach, we will promote local ownership, sustainability, and integration of the community in training and decision-making processes.
