Temperatures on the Antarctic Peninsula have increased by 3 degrees in 50 years. We want to better understand this data, including weather patterns and increased rainfall at our sites. We also want to continue collecting data on a unique colony of gentoo penguins to understand fluctuations in breeding success in relation to visitor numbers, rising temperatures, beach debris and sea ice, so we can respond. The pandemic’s impact on our funding has put future projects at risk.

We would like to install a new climate station to gather meteorological data (wind speed, dew point, air temperature, humidity, precipitation, atmospheric pressure), and record penguin breeding and climate data between Nov - March and annually, sharing data with meteorologists and scientists at British Antarctic Survey for analysis. Weather data will be offered freely for use in climate studies. Long-term data collection will enable us to comprehensively and holistically manage sites sustainably.
