We will plant two Tiny Forests - dense native woodlands the size of a tennis court. Tiny Forests help reduce the impacts of climate change, support urban wildlife, and connect people with nature. Each forest will contain 600 native trees and become home to up to 500 plant and animal species.

    Situation

Environmental issues such as flooding and heat stress are increasingly affecting urban areas, and this is only expected to worsen due to climate change. At the same time, the number and condition of urban greenspaces has declined (State of Nature, 2019), threatening wildlife and weakening the connection between people and nature. Isolation and disengagement from environmental issues is a significant social issue exacerbated by a lack of safe public space to enjoy nature, exercise and socialise.

    Solution

Earthwatch is an environmental charity with science at its heart. Tiny Forests bring the benefits of a forest – reconnecting people with nature, helping to mitigate the impacts of climate change, and providing nature-rich habitat patches to support urban wildlife – right into the heart of our cities. This builds climate-resilience and supports economic growth whilst enhancing community and individual wellbeing. At only 200m2, this solution can be brought into even the most urbanised areas.
