This project will teach communities to harvest rain so they have clean water all year round. Currently families walk each day to fetch water from wells. Pumping water from wells depletes the groundwater levels. Harvesting rainwater provides clean water in a environmentally sustainable way.

    Situation

Families in the areas that we work in have no access to piped water. They typically rely on wells for their drinking water. Pumping water out of the ground is not environmentally sustainable. Semi-arid areas have low levels of ground water. In the Thar desert, it can take millions of years for rain to filter through to replenish the ground water. When water is pumped out faster than it is replenished the borehole becomes dry. Furthermore, well water is often contaminated unlike rainwater.

    Solution

At WaterHarvest, we work with families to build rainwater harvesting structures which catch and store the rainwater. When it rains, the water runs into the gutter, through a down pipe and into an underground storage tank. This water can then be used by the family throughout the year. A filter is also provided to further improve the quality of the rainwater. This system used only locally available materials and skills meaning that it is easy to fix, maintain and replicate. A tank lasts 25 years.
