This campaign has now closed

The Chesney Trust, working with the local community in Engcongolweni, north of Malawi, has built and is helping run a secondary boarding school for 160 girls. We have water from a borehole but urgently need pure mains water for preparing food, washing teeth etc. The nearest access point is now 1 km

    Situation

Lack of access to pure water. The school's current water supply is piped from a borehole but impurites are affecting the girls' teeth, staining ceramic ware, corroding pipework and a possible risk to health as the water is used for cleaning teeth, and in preparation of meals.

    Solution

The quotation we received from the Northern Region Water Board in September 2018 for providing water at the school was about £20,000, significantly more than we could pay. Since then, the Water Board has been extending its pipelines along the tarmac roads into country areas and the nearest access point is now just 1 kilometre from the school. The quotation we received on 9 December for a water connection at the school was MK1,211,598 or approximately £1,200.
