In the rural village of Nyagacyamo, Gatsibo, RWANDA a school teaches 160 children of all faiths & provides a free midday meal. Many children are orphans of mothers with HIV as a result of the 1994 genocide. They wash & drink from puddles & polluted water shared by animals, they need clean water.

    Situation

A simple Church hosts a school of more than 150 children who eat a midday meal provided by a Food Programme. At least 60 of the children are orphans of mothers who died from HIV and the daily meal might be all they survive on. The Church cooks in an outdoor kitchen using water that has to be transported in 5 litre containers on the back of bikes from a water source 7 miles away. The children wash their hands before their meal in water collected from puddles if there has been recent rain

    Solution

Working with a Bishop - project manager, from Kigali & a Pastor in the village we will employ local people to place two water harvesting tanks holding 2500 litres each near the front of the existing Church. Guttering will be attached to the roof & pipework leading to the tanks so that rain water can be collected safely instead of in rusty tins or from puddles currently. The tanks will be placed upon foundations of stones & cement & secured with external metal frames & the taps locked,
