Build It want to build a new maternity & infant care unit at Libuyu Clinic Livingstone in Zambia to serve a growing population of over 22,000. This will include an antenatal unit, post-natal ward, & a new delivery room with privacy and showers for the 30 mothers who give birth there each month.

Situation
Infant mortality globally is tragic: every 4 seconds a child dies. Yet solutions to infant mortality exist and the majority are easily preventable. Maternal deaths are also avoidable, as the healthcare solutions to deal with complications are well known. Yet in Zambia, maternal deaths account for 18% of all deaths in women aged between 15-49 years. This project aims to improve maternal and infant health for a disadvantaged community living in Libuyu on the outskirts of Livingstone, in Zambia.
Solution
Build It aims to construct a new, ‘fit for purpose’ Maternity and Infant Health Unit, consisting of a new ante-natal unit and postnatal ward, with more beds & privacy, a new delivery room increasing capacity and safety, toilets & shower facilities improving hygiene, & a separate waiting area, plus connection to mains electricity, which is essential. Based on a professional design, it will consist of a single storey maternity ward, built as a separate unit away from the existing clinic reception.
