    Situation

In Southern Province, Zambia there is one doctor for every 16,000 people (1 to 400 in the UK), a shortage of clinical officers and nurses, and poor access to basic infrastructure that enables good health. These issues are exasperated in rural communities where people have to walk up to 40km to access the nearest nurse, and in some cases up to 2 hours to access dirty water. This results in high rates of water borne diseases in a context where there is poor access to health workers.

    Solution

On Call Africa delivers medical services, health education and health system strengthening activities in rural communities. We will install bore holes in two communities with poor access to clean water to enhance the impact of our work, support sustainability and to reduce the rates of water borne diseases in the long term. In order to ensure the sustainability of our work we will also provide health education on the importance of clean water and train community members how to repair the pump.
