Classroom learning in prisons has been cancelled and prisoners are locked in their cells for 23 hours a day. The distance learning courses that PET provides (which can be studied in cell) are more important than ever. We need your help to meet the increasing demand for our courses and support.

    Situation

Normally prison-provided education tends to focus on basic literacy and numeracy, and though some prisons offer workshops for further training, access is limited. Prisoners have no mainstream access to further and higher level education, and no opportunities for progression. Currently even basic classroom based learning has been cancelled, and so there is very little for prisoners to engage with educationally. This means they are in their cells for long hours with nothing constructive to do.

    Solution

PET will provide access to over 100 distance learning courses including GCSEs, A-levels, Open University courses and vocational subjects. We will provide advice and support as prisoners decide which courses to pursue and help them as they progress with their studies. Many prisoners have studied via distance learning for the first time during lockdown thanks to short taster courses developed by PET. We will support these prisoners to progress to their first full distance learning courses.
