We set up “Club Wilber” in 2019 to support families who have a child with sight loss and their siblings. We run inclusive and accessible activities, outings and events for the whole family to give them a chance to enjoy life together in an affordable and mutually supportive way.

    Situation

According to research by disability charities, life costs an average family with a disabled child £581 more per month to have the same standard of living as a family with non-disabled children. Families who have a visually impaired child alongside other sighted children, find it very difficult to find activities that the whole family can participate in without one child feeling excluded. Parents also need to access support to help cope with the financial and emotional stress they face.

    Solution

We have been working with families across Yorkshire who have a visually impaired child alongside other sighted children and who struggle to find activities that the whole family can enjoy. We have devised a range of inclusive activities including art, baking, crafts and music as well as events such as Disney parties, Halloween fun and trips to Cadbury World, wet Wheels in Scarborough and sensory Easter Egg hunts. The families involved are able to find mutual support and make new friends too.
