    Situation

Our Social Development projects and clubs address the shortage of out-of-school and post-college activities for children and young people with autism or learning disabilities and their desire to mix with a wider peer group. To help them overcome their isolation they need additional support and specialised activities that take into account their special needs. By accessing such activities their (often low) self-esteem is greatly enhanced as are their confidence and social skills.

    Solution

Our activities take place during school holidays and term-time weekends and link disabled participants with volunteers (close in age to them wherever possible) who help them actively participate in a wide range of activities. E.g. music, drama, art, dance, massage, yoga, sports, cooking, IT workshops (during lockdown we do these on-line) and days out to places of individual choice. The trained volunteers provide the interaction with a wider peer group on which the disabled young people thrive.
