The Great Middlemarch Mystery is a citywide, immersive production taking place in Coventry in 2021. We are raising funds to run drama workshops to reach out to some of the most deprived and excluded residents, who will become part of the narrative, and play a crucial role in the final production.

    Situation

In 2021 Coventry will be a City of Culture and as such Dash Arts will be performing a new production based on George Eliot's Middlemarch there. However, Coventry is also an area in which 26.7% of neighbourhoods are amongst the most deprived in the country and it sits in the top 1/3 of least-arts-engaged regions in England. It has also welcomed more Syrian refugees per head of population than any other city in Britain and unfortunately integration is a big issue.

    Solution

This community-centred project will work with some of the least-engaged with the arts in the city through:actively creating stories and dialogue which responds to George Eliot’s Middlemarch; seeking to welcome these overlooked and excluded communities into arts participation; and by providing a opportunity to “own” the work and the stories that they will play out. Out of the participants 30 will feature in the final production and all will attend a special performance to honour them.
