“I wonder if…” Every scientist has ideas in the back of their mind. All too often these ideas stay there because it’s difficult to get research funding without having some evidence an idea might work. Our Big Ideas fund aims to solve this problem, and bring those novel, untested ideas into the lab.

    Situation

Research funding applications ask scientists to submit an idea alongside supporting evidence; it is difficult to get funding for a totally new idea where there is no supporting evidence. For parents of a child affected by the life-limiting condition Duchenne muscular dystrophy, knowing that a scientist may have an idea that can’t be tested because there is no funding is devastating; an untested idea might represent a new treatment for their child. Or even a cure.

    Solution

Action Duchenne has funded pioneering projects before - we’ve seen amazing successes, and occasional failure. All our projects are assessed by independent scientists. Uniquely, Big Ideas grants will need minimal supporting data, and will fund initial experiments on scientists’ ideas to generate evidence needed by other funders. We know this funding is high risk, but it’s a risk worth taking; potential benefits are huge. Everything starts with an idea; we want to bring the next ideas into the
