Through Twins Trust’s first Centre for Research and Clinical Excellence at St George’s hospital (launched July 2020) we will conduct life-saving research and educate health professionals to improve their clinical practice and care of multiple birth pregnancies to help save twin babies lives.

    Situation

Twin pregnancies are high risk with disproportionately high death rates and incidence of disability: specific diseases e.g. Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) where twins transfuse blood in the womb; 50% chance of pre-term birth; 7x likelihood of neonatal care; 6x chance of cerebral palsy; 1.5x more likely to end in stillbirth and 3x more likely to end in neonatal death compared with singletons. Inconsistent maternity care & a lack of research allow these inequalities to continue.

    Solution

At our new Centre we’ll conduct 3 medical research studies per year; host the national TTTS Registry, encouraging & assisting maternity units to input more cases; provide a national programme of education & support to health professionals to help maternity units improve the care of multiple pregnancies in line with NICE guidelines. Our Maternity Engagement project showed that when units improved adherence to NICE an 18% reduction in neonatal deaths & 7% reduction in stillbirths was achieved.
