Focussa Primary School is a vibrant community-owned school providing education to extremely vulnerable children, many of whom are orphans. This remote and deprived area of Western Kenya is home to some of the poorest communities in Kenya. Focussa provides a home, safety, education and opportunity.

    Situation

Late last year, Focussa Primary School received a demand from the government to improvement infrastructure, or face closure, a distressful possibility for these children who have nowhere else to turn. COCO ran a campaign to fund the building of one new classroom but another two are required to cater for the 152 children who currently attend school. The need for the school is apparent in the number of children who attend, and we want to ensure they have an environment fit for quality education.

    Solution

COCO’s Schools For Life programme owes its success to our collaborative approach to creating sustainable schools. Focussa is one of ten partner schools in East Africa where we have established quality buildings with water harvesting and solar power to ensure ample infrastructure for a quality learning environment. Our relationship with Focussa means that on receipt of funds we can work with the community to complete the final building phases to sustain this school long into the future.
