The new pond will be an important feature of the Bell House garden. It will create an amazing new habitat for a wide range of wildlife which schoolchildren and other visitors will be able to discover and learn about.

    Situation

Over the past century 70 percent of ponds have been lost from the UK countryside, so building and maintaining ponds in gardens has become of increased importance. Both aquatic and land-based animals benefit from ponds as a source of food and drink as well as for breeding. Access to nature is good for our health and wellbeing and is also important for children’s development. Yet many people who live in urban areas miss out on opportunities to spend time outdoors and interact with wildlife.

    Solution

We plan to build a new pond which will have a positive impact on both nature and local people. The new pond will become a valuable habitat and resource for lots of different wildlife. Garden volunteers will have the opportunity to help build the pond and will benefit from maintaining it. Bell House is extending its schools enrichment programme to include more outdoor activities so that local children can learn about nature and benefit from spending time outdoors.
