We work with leading scientists in the field of breast cancer research to deliver ground-breaking results. Our research is critical in understanding the chemical and environmental causes of breast cancer, a disease which affects 54,700 women in the UK each year and is increasing in prevalence.

    Situation

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. Women have an estimated 1 in 7 lifetime risk of getting the disease. It is a diverse group of diseases with no simple cause. Many factors come together to make an individual susceptible; these are known as risk factors. Some are inherited, some are incurred throughout life and others are present in the environment. Not all risk factors are well understood. To prevent breast cancer we need to understand all of its risk factors.

    Solution

There is growing evidence that exposure to environmental chemicals is increasing our risk of breast cancer. This area of research is poorly funded, yet important if we are to identify all risk factors associated with the disease. Using a range of techniques such as cell culture, microscopy, molecular biology and chemical analysis, our research will seek to identify which chemicals affect breast tissue in ways that increase risk, and the mechanisms of their effects.
