Support Getting on Board to diversify charity trustee boards. Only a third of trustees are women, a third are under 50 and only 8% are people of colour. We work with women, younger people and people of colour to support them to become trustees, and we teach charities how to diversify their boards.

    Situation

2/3 of trustees are male, 2/3 are over 50 and 92% are white. Charity boards are not representative of the communities they serve or of wider society. Most trustees are still recruited informally. This needs to change not only because it's morally important, but because diverse boards have been shown to be more effective. Better diversity on charity boards will build the resilience of the charity sector.

    Solution

We work with women, younger people and people of colour to support them to become trustees, and we teach charities how to diversify their boards. Our programmes include training and one-to-one support, as well as campaigns for better charity board diversity.
