    Situation

COVID-19 movement restrictions left many deprived households without a means to earn a living; cutting children off from vital support networks, such as schools & friends, that help keep them safe – & exacerbating social isolation that causes poor mental health. Zambia has 1.2 million orphans & vulnerable children & the Government & extended family cannot help everyone; without adequate support many cannot access the safety of a classroom & are at risk of child labour, physical or sexual abuse.

    Solution

ZOA-UK will work with grassroots partners in 5 deprived communities, empowering them to take action so that orphans and vulnerable children can access and remain in education, a proven route out of poverty, by supporting fees, uniforms and books, as required. We recognise that no one can learn if they are hungry or thrive if they are unhappy and isolated, so will improve their support networks and provide counselling and nutritional support that helps them to reach their potential.
