Located in Eastern Congo, the park is home to unparalleled biodiversity including 1/3 of the world’s population of endangered mountain gorillas. Faced with coronoavirus, Ebola, and the increasing cycles of violence in the region, we have never been more worried about the future of the park. In April, the deadliest attack to date, 12 Virunga rangers lost their lives in a violent militia attack. The first, but unfortunately not the only attack this year. These threats impact our ability to protect the park. By building an emergency fund we can respond quickly in times of crisis and ensure our day-to-day operations are not at risk.
The emergency fund will support the park during times of crisis such as the 24th April incident, and the park’s closure due to the Ebola and coronavirus outbreak, which has had a significant impact on income.
Virunga National Park is unlike anywhere else on earth. This year has been the most challenging yet with Ebola, coronavirus, and increasing cycles of violence in the area posing multiple threats to the future of the park and the lives that depend on it.
