"I get a healthy meal at the same time each week which is the only regular meal that I have. It also helps to lift depression."
"The food is amazing here and I really enjoy it. It’s always so healthy and it always amazes me how they can turn recycled food into such amazing food."
"It’s been really rewarding to hear how much of a difference Foodcycle has made to people. Everyone is so grateful and it’s nice to feel part of a community and doing something positive during these crazy times."
Coronavirus has pushed more people into food poverty than ever in recent times. The Office for National Statistics reports that 2.6 million households are struggling to cover expenses such as energy and food. Meanwhile 5 million tonnes of edible food is wasted in the UK every year. Many of the people we serve regularly skip meals and have only basic cooking facilities. Huge numbers in the UK suffer from loneliness and the social isolation of this pandemic has exacerbated this.
We will create nutritious meals from food that would otherwise go to waste and distribute them at community kitchens in areas of social deprivation. For some, this will be the only cooked meal they will have all week. Until we can reopen our community meals, we will provide a cooked meal and bag of food surplus for people to come and collect. We will help people overcome social isolation through our Check-in and Chat phone service which enables guests to have a friendly chat with a volunteer.
