    Situation

Rural communities in Guinea Bissau and Sierra Leone lose many children are every year primarily due to dirty water causing diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea and malaria and now COVID-19. Many also die from malnutrition. People cannot use current water sources to safely wash hands, drink or cook. They must walk for hours every day to access water, meaning that they (mainly girls) cannot attend school. Villagers have no health centre, nor even proper roads to reach one.

    Solution

Providing wells to villages and training residents on how to maintain them ensures access to clean water and that people do not spend hours per day collecting water. Women-led market gardens empower local women, tackle malnutrition with healthy vegetables and bring income. Training for young women in natural medicine improves health and further empowers women. Education on sanitation, disease and nutrition further decreases disease risk. A unique community-led approach ensures lasting change.
