In low-income countries, drawing parallels with the Christmas story is still too easy. At the time of the Nativity, only the rich sought medical help in childbirth. Today in sub-Saharan Africa roughly 50% of mothers give birth without a midwife. Help us to provide safe childbirth in rural Africa.

    Situation

In rural Ethiopia, Malawi and Uganda access to safe childbirth and quality antenatal care is difficult. Currently the lifetime risk of dying in pregnancy or childbirth in Ethiopia for example is 1 in 55 compared to 1 in 8,400 in UK (WHO/World Bank). This highest in rural communities where there is often poor access to education/knowledge on maternal health, it is difficult to physically get to health facilities and when women do get there they may not have trained staff or the equipment needed.

    Solution

Maternity Worldwide uses an integrated approach of both demand-side (community based) interventions to provide education and financial empowerment to women and supply-side (health facility) interventions to train staff and help equip health facilities to improve maternal and newborn health. We have a proven track record (for example in our Malawi programme increasing the proportion of women giving birth with a skilled attendant from 79 to 97% over three years. We wish to develop new projects.
