Jacari’s mission is to improve the confidence and language skills of disadvantaged children who don't speak English as their first language and are struggling at school, helping them to reach their full potential. We do this by providing them with free 1:1 tuition with a trained volunteer.

Situation
The children we work with face considerable challenges, educationally and socially. Having limited English language skills significantly impacts a child’s ability to access the curriculum, perform well in school and participate in community life, all of which affect their confidence, well-being, and opportunity to reach their full potential. The challenges they face, including the risk of them falling behind in school, have been further exacerbated during the Covid-19 crisis.
Solution
We work with our partner schools to identify children who require extra support. We then match each child with a volunteer, recruited and trained by us, who tutors the child on a weekly basis, at school, at home or online. The sessions are fun, focused on the child’s particular needs, and aim to boost their academic skills and confidence. This 1:1 tailored support, which these children would be otherwise unable to access, tackles the challenges they face in a simple, transformative way.
