Our project supports girls, aged 8-12 who experience significant emotional difficulties, to grow their resilience and mental health. Through workshops and 1-to-1 mentoring, RISE aims to empower a group that typically remains unidentified and under-served despite being at greater risk in adolescence.

    Situation

Research indicates that greater numbers of young women are suffering a mental health crisis in adolescence. Unlike boys who tend towards external behaviour patterns to express anxiety/trauma, girls tend towards internal behaviours such as depression, low self-esteem, anxiety and withdrawal – less visible and more likely to go undetected. In a sample of children aged 14, 24% of girls reported high levels of depressive symptoms compared to 9% of boys, but parents detected fewer symptoms in girls.

    Solution

The RISE project will deliver a programme of three workshops to local schools, aimed at pre-adolescent girls experiencing above-average levels of anxiety. Workshops will explore emotional literacy, coping mechanisms and social competency. In addition, targeted 1-to-1 mentoring support for 9 months will be offered to those most in need. Workshops and mentoring will empower girls to build their own tool-box of self-esteem and resilience-building strategies to draw on in the years ahead.
